The last couple of days have seen parts of block 1 overturned ready for the water pipes I assume. This picture was taken this morning. I hope the disruption is not for the whole two months that Bu Bader (comment on previous quote) mentioned this phase will take.

In any case this is good news. Water connection wil hopefully also mean some greening of the area. can’t wait.

My neighbor and friend, AbdulRahman, sent me this recent information ad from one of the newspapers. It looks like we are finally there with water supply. The tankers that always seem to start their pumps as I doze off to sleep will soon be a memory for us in Mangaf – and not a day too soon.

Block 1 water supply will be disrupted. I hope the new connections (my house is one) will be a simple process without too much digging and mess… Good luck to those doing the work and congratulations to the residents of Mangaf.

I have no excuse for the delay between posts. Maybe now that I’m able to post from my phone, I’ll remember to do so more frequently. The fact that I don’t travel as much as I used to will also help.

The works on the highway (30) seem to be progressing. There is a lot of pressure on this road and It will only increase with all the residential areas under construction further north of Mangaf (near Messila). This exit will help when entering and exiting Mangaf and I hope it facilitates better traffic movement – especially during the morning rush.

No we just need the water to be connected and for some nice shrubs to decorate the streets. Anyone know when the water is coming?

I have been neglecting this blog for sometime now… It’s funny how the nearest of things can feel like the furthest.  I often remember to post an update as I’m boarding a flight out of Kuwait.  Then I get too busy when I come back home.

There are so many changes to the area with roads, footpaths, road signs and even newly finished houses.  New mosques are nearing completion and many gardens are also taking shape.

The most recent update which I could not ignore is the testing of the street lights earlier today.  It looks like the final set of street lamps will be switched on this week.  It will feel very different – I remember when phase 1 was switched on back in December 2007.

When they started paving the footpaths last winter, I was disappointed to see no space left for trees and shrubs on the main routes.  Over the past two weeks, they’ve dug out the blocks in the middle of the wider paths and set up the borders for plants in the future.

I can’t believe that something this simple is not taken into account the first time round.  I am happy however that it wasn’t overlooked altogether.

Looking fuller and more like a typical Kuwaiti suburb, Google Earth have updated again recently and the above is the current view.  No new roads are visible, which means the next update will look much more complete.  There are signs of the preliminary work done on the main routes.

With the terrible weather and the extra heat associated with road-surfacing, there has been a lot of activity at night recently.  I took these shots outside our house a couple of nights ago.  They started working around midnight and finished just before 4am.

It’s not by any means difficult, but it’s a lot of work! I would also argue that in the current weather it’s barely legal. They do start very early though, and are done by 11:30am. The bitumen (black stuff at the end of the video) was applied Monday afternoon. This is before the layers of asphalt, that make up the actual road surface, will be added.

I’ve been wanting to do someting like this for many parts of Mangaf: Mosques and schools being built, roads under construction, and even houses appearing from holes in the ground. But unfortunately with the weather and dust (and time!) it’s almost impossible. My Canon G11 came to the rescue. I tied it to our bedroom window (from the inside) and kept it more-or-less in the same spot. Took some snaps of the men doing the various steps.

The work started sometime ago when tonnes of earth was removed. Then new sand was brought in and compacted onto the ground. The piping was done for the sewage and rainwater lines. Then the kerb was laid and manholes fixed in place. The process above comes after weeks of tweaking the area into the right levels, and completing the small jobs here and there. It is by no means a small job. In the pictures, you will also see the base for one of the street lamps to come. Transformation is almost complete.
