I know it’s borderline childish… but I enjoyed driving on our first new road. Keep safe out there… Still some large vehicles around.

January 28, 2010It’s been a while since I posted and there have been many developments. The area is one big mess, but if you look at the big picture, it’s getting there… I can’t wait for all the mud to go and the noise of the heavy trucks and builders.
Instead of taking lots of photos, I took a short drive around block 1 (and a tiny bit of 2) and speeded up the boring bits. I will repeat this when there is a visible difference to the area I filmed.
Less than a year from now, this will be a memory and we will have a town that looks as boring as any other town in Kuwait 
I can’t wait.

Roads by 2011
February 27, 2009I found this document on the Parliament’s website. According to the minutes of meeting for Kuwait’s plan, Mangaf’s roads are planned to start (tendering etc which we have already seen) in 2008 and complete by 2011.

Google Earth Update

They updated this finally and I would guess this image was captured in April 2008. My main clue is that the foundations for the new orange houses (in block 1) are being dug in this photo, and that’s when it all started.
I promised an update almost two years ago… I didn’t expect it would take this long.
I will work on getting the next one and hope it will have new roads on it
Something out of Nothing
October 27, 2008After months of NOISE, dust and many other problems, associated with any large building site, I am finally able to share these photographs. It’s a number of houses ready to hit the rent market here in Mangaf. My guess is some time in December. They’re located in Block 1 left after the petrol station.
I wish the owner was responsible for the roads in this area. The pace of work was at times scary. The speed and the number of men on the site are beyond the need of any project of this size. I was thankful however, as it meant a relatively shorter period of concrete mixers and builders right in front of my face. Every day including Fridays starting as early as 5am since April!

It’s not to my taste, but at least I’m able to say it’s not ugly. They are putting the finishing touches on paint outside and in. It won’t be long before they’re hooked up to the grid and are illuminating our street. All this aside, I pray for good neighbors - now that the neighborhood has been completed.
Blue Elephant Blues
October 7, 2008It seems the rumours of the Blue Elephant closing are true. I hate to be the one who confirms this but the restaurant is changing! It will remain “oriental” but will not be part of the same international chain. I first tried this restaurant in Copenhagen, then in London. My wife and I have eaten at this one on average twice a month for the past year. They’ve even mastered our meals for take-away (Thanks Alex). I’m surprised they’re not making enough money just out of the two of us.
The good news is that the great staff will be the same – which means we will still have delicious food and good service.
I will miss seeing this logo.
