This time last year

May 11, 2008
It’s nice to go back to positive posts rather than the recent grumpy ones… Sorry about those!

It feels like it was only a few weeks ago when I took the top-left photo of the building site. At that stage, the main structure had just been completed. I had planned to do this all along, so I took the photos from exactly the same point.

I noticed yesterday that the first photo was taken exactly one year ago – so it felt appropriate to write this post today.

The dates were as follows:

First 12 05 2007
Second 14 11 2007
Third 19 01 2008
Fourth 08 05 2008

Electricity

May 11, 2008
A few weeks ago, we lost power at the house…. The whole house.

I checked everything and it didn’t make sense…. Every time I switch the boxes on, they go off again. The thing that puzzled me even more was that the AC remained on throughout.

To cut a long story short, when we finally convinced the Ministry technician to come out, he confirmed that the earthing of the house has a current! This is not good.

The reason: They broke into the substation and stole a cable. The technician was not at all surprised saying it happens all the time! He smiled and said “Ali Baba had been there”. He showed me what they had done starting with the breaking of the padlock outside.

As a rule, I don’t wish bad things on people – but I make an exception here. It would be so wonderful if they get electrocuted next time they attempt this! I pray this happens soon.

Never as simple as 1 2 3

This photo was taken on the Mangaf/Sabahya exit from 30 heading East. The road that connects 30 with the coastal road (Al Sahel Sports Club) with the oil pipelines running in parallel.

This sign has been driving me nuts every time I drive past it.

Which road is 303?

And what about the poor coastal road? It’s labeled 209 at exit 209 in Fintas, then according to this sign, it’s 211 if you turn right, and in the distance 213 if you turn left!! Who decides this? Who puts up these signs? I want to shoot each one of them…. Twice!

Then to add to the confusion, they put these signs in Mangaf
(see below). The same road is now referred to as Al Sahil Road (nice) but the number 209 appears again. The road has 3 numbers within 200 metres.

WAKE UP PEOPLE! IT’S NOT THAT COMPLICATED!
